What was happening in Latin America and the Caribbean during World War I

In Mexico the revolution went on through the war years. The United States occupied Veracruz in April 1914, Pancho Villa's army took Zacatecas in June, Obregón's trenches and machine guns beat Villa's cavalry at Celaya in 1915, and in 1917 a congress at Querétaro approved the constitution still in force. The United States also occupied Haiti from 1915 and took over the Danish West Indies in 1917. The world war reached the region by sea: a German squadron sank two British cruisers off Coronel in Chile in November 1914, and the German cruiser Dresden was cornered off Más a Tierra in 1915. The Panama Canal opened to ships in August 1914. In 1916 Argentina hosted the first South American football championship, and CONMEBOL, the continent's football confederation, was founded.

This page lists all 129 events in our records for Latin America and the Caribbean from January 1914 to December 1918, so the months before and after the fighting are here too. 18 are battles and other fighting; the rest are the politics, disasters, culture and daily life that went on alongside. The biggest come first, then every event year by year.

· Argentina · South America

Argentina hosted a tournament for its independence centennial, with Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil taking part. It was the first edition of what became the Copa América.

Why it is interesting. The Copa América is the oldest continental football competition still being played.

Notes and dating details

Dates 2-17 July 1916, four teams (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay) and the independence centenary link come from the separate English article on the 1916 tournament; the final was suspended after a riot on 16 July and replayed on 17 July.

Architecture

The Panama Canal opens to ships

· Panama · North America

The canal was inaugurated on 15 August with the passage of the SS Ancon, completing a project led by George Washington Goethals.

United States begins its occupation of Veracruz

· Veracruz, Mexico · North America

Medium confidence: rests on one source family, or a detail is uncertain.

Why it is interesting. Over 6,000 troops were ashore by the evening of the second day.

Notes and dating details

Wikidata gives 1914-11 (month). Article gives 21 April to 23 November 1914.

War & conflict

The United States occupation of Haiti begins

· Port-au-Prince, Haiti · North America

A force of 330 US Marines came ashore at Port-au-Prince, starting an occupation that lasted until 1 August 1934. It followed years of instability and the lynching of President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam by a mob.

Why it is interesting. During the occupation the US used forced labour for infrastructure projects, causing hundreds to thousands of deaths.

Notes and dating details

The last Marines left on 15 August 1934, once authority had formally passed to the Haitian Gendarmerie; the end date stored is 1 August 1934, when the occupation formally ended after Roosevelt reaffirmed the 1933 disengagement agreement. German Wikipedia gives the same 28 July 1915 landing by 330 Marines and the 1 August 1934 end.

Politics & diplomacy

US sailors are briefly arrested in Tampico over a flag-salute dispute

· Tampico, Mexico · North America

US sailors refuelling a whaleboat at Tampico were detained at gunpoint by Mexican soldiers; the US demanded a 21-gun salute to its flag, Huerta refused on 12 April, and the dispute became the pretext for the Veracruz landing.

Why it is interesting. Only a week earlier, at Mexico's request, a US gunboat had saluted the Mexican flag with 21 guns.

Notes and dating details

The account of the number of sailors seized is inconsistent within the article.

War & conflict

The Pancho Villa Expedition ends

· Chihuahua, Mexico · North America

Medium confidence: rests on one source family, or a detail is uncertain.

The US Army operation in Chihuahua, begun in March 1916 after Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, came to an end without having stopped Villa's escape.

Why it is interesting. War with Mexico was averted by diplomacy while the force stayed in the country.

Notes and dating details

The infobox and lead give 14 March 1916 to 7 February 1917; Wikidata also gives 7 February 1917.

Politics & diplomacy

United States takes possession of the Danish West Indies

· Danish West Indies · North America

American authorities took over the islands, sold by Denmark for $25 million, and renamed them the Virgin Islands of the United States.

Why it is interesting. Denmark-Norway ruled the islands from 1754 to 1814 and Denmark alone from 1814 to 1917; English is the main language of the territory today.

Notes and dating details

Treaty signed 4 August 1916; ratifications exchanged 17 January 1917. The earlier line saying English became the main language after the transfer was not supported and was removed. Merged duplicate row 1917-03-31-denmark-hands-the-danish-west-indies-to-the-united-states (Denmark hands the Danish West Indies to the United States). Its notes: The treaty of sale was signed on 4 August 1916 and ratifications were exchanged on 17 January 1917 (per the US Virgin Islands article); this article dates the sale itself to 17 January 1917. Danish Wikipedia gives the colony's start as 1672 and its end as March 1917. Wikidata gives 1754 as the start and only 1917 for the end.

· Zacatecas, Mexico · North America

Pancho Villa's División del Norte defeated federal troops under General Luis Medina Barrón at Zacatecas. It was the bloodiest battle of the campaign to unseat President Victoriano Huerta, who resigned on 15 July.

Why it is interesting. The victory demoralized Huerta's supporters and led to his resignation within weeks.

Sport

· Buenos Aires, Argentina · South America

The South American football confederation CONMEBOL was founded. That year Argentina also hosted the first South American Football Championship, which later became the Copa América.

Why it is interesting. It is the oldest of FIFA's six continental confederations.

· Celaya, Mexico · North America

Medium confidence: rests on one source family, or a detail is uncertain.

Constitutionalist forces under Álvaro Obregón fought Pancho Villa's División del Norte near Celaya, in Guanajuato, Mexico. Obregón's defensive trenches and machine guns defeated Villa's cavalry charges.

Why it is interesting. The two Celaya battles were crucial to the outcome of the Mexican Revolution and pointed to Villa's eventual defeat.

Notes and dating details

Infobox gives 6-15 April 1915. Lead says the first battle was 6-7 April and the second 15-16 April, while body text has the second beginning 13 April, so no end date is stored. Wikidata gives 6 to 15 April.

The Ceará state football championship counts its official history from 1915, when Ceará won the first officially recognised title, with Stella as runners-up. Clubs had contested a state title since 1906, but the federation recognised the 1915 to 1919 titles only in 2008.

    Notes

The English article's infobox says founded 1915 and its notes say Ceará's 1915 to 1919 titles were recognised only in 2008 and a 1914 title was not counted as official. Portuguese Wikipedia says club-run state championships date from 1906, a league was set up in 1912 and renamed in 1915, and cites an act of the state federation (11/2008) for counting 1915 as the first official edition. Nayarit joined the Mexican federation as a state in 1917, among the last territories to do so. Its capital is Tepic.

    Notes

Statehood was a series of legal steps, and sources date it differently: the article's infobox gives an admission date of 26 January 1917; a Congress of Nayarit document says the new federal Constitution, promulgated 5 February 1917, created the state in its articles 43 and 47, and that the state was recognised on 24 April 1917 with General Jesús M. Ferreira as provisional governor; the article's text (citing the state congress) and Wikidata give 1 May 1917. Stored as year.

Venezuela's Museum of Fine Arts was created in Caracas by presidential decree. It had no building of its own at first; both of its present buildings were later designed by the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva.

    Notes

Year disputed. English Wikipedia and Spanish Wikipedia's history section give 1917 (decree of acting president Victorino Márquez Bustillos); Spanish Wikipedia's infobox gives creation on 24 July 1917 and opening on 19 October 1917, but another of its sentences says 1918, and a 2023 El Diario article says the president ordered the museum in 1918. Wikidata's 24 July 1917 is referenced only to Spanish Wikipedia. 1917 kept as better supported, year only. First home: English Wikipedia says the building now called the Palacio de las Academias, Spanish Wikipedia says space in the National Academy of Fine Arts' building, so the summary names neither.
